We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely on God, who raises the dead. 2 Corinthians 1:9
I was reading the Word this morning and when I got to this verse I thought to myself I know I have certainly been through some of my own trials where I have felt like I just couldn’t take it any more. I would be so stressed out, sad, and overwhelmed. I have been beyond my own ability to endure that I wondered to myself how long could I live through these circumstances. But then God’s sweet Holy Spirit faithfully reminds me that I don’t have to rely on myself, God had been waiting for me to come to the end myself so that I would learn to rely on Him. We were not meant to carry heavy burdens on our own. He wants us to give them to Him.
Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
I am convinced from my own experiences and from reading through God’s Word that our Lord will allow us to go through different difficult seasons and storms in our lives so that His power and faithfulness can be revealed to us, so that the real us can be revealed, and so that we will grow in our faith and maturity in Christ. All of these trials are meant to build us up, not tare us down. (1 Peter 1:6-7, James 1:1-2)
It’s OK to feel so overwhelmed that we feel like we can’t take it any more, that is when we should humble ourselves at God’s feet and tell Him,
“Lord I need you. This too much for me to handle on my own. Help me God.”
Coming to the end of ourselves is the best place for us, because we realize that we need God; we realize we can’t make it on our own, in our own strength. Thank God we don’t have to because He wants to help us. He wants us to see that we need Him and that He did not leave us alone in this world without His help. The SAME power that raised Christ from the dead lives in the believer. All we have to do is draw on the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s grace and we will find the help we need to overcome our troubles and to stand in the midst of adversity. All we have to do is call on Him for help. (Romans 8:11)
Then call on Me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give Me glory. Psalm 50:15
I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me. He freed me from all of my fears. Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; He saved me from all my troubles. Psalm 34:4-6
This High Priest of ours understands our weakness, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:15-16
As I learn more about God’s grace He reveals to me over and over again that I don’t have to have it all together to be called His or to be used by Him. God’s grace has led me to true freedom which has empowered me to overcome in every situation that I face. His grace has brought me through every trial I have encountered on my journey with Christ. God’s grace has helped me to accept my own weaknesses and to rely on God’s strength and power instead of my own. I am not ashamed any more to allow my circumstances to humble me to the point where I have to confess that I feel weak and unable to endure. Paul said it best when he said,
“So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
I want to encourage anyone reading this who may be going through a storm of difficulties, you need to REALLY let go and let God. It’s OK to say, “I give up God. Here please take all my problems Lord. I can’t fix this. It’s in your hands now. Give me your strength to patiently endure while you work this all out.” Then step back, stand on His promises found in His Word (the bible), and allow God to do what He does best, work out His plan and purpose in our lives. (Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28)
He is saying to you right now, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
I pray you have been encouraged.
